Information Architecture and Information Communications Design : Reference

Hi

Ever since the first lecture with Kevin, he has been talking about a guy called Steve Krug and telling that we have to read is book in the library because you get these fake web designers who think that creating a website is a doddle and you can just put stuff he and their with out taking any consideration for the user but Steve Krug makes it out what it should be, into a piece of art. Steve Krug knows what hes talking about when i researched working for the likes of giants in the web world like Apple and A.O.L, so i decide that i would give him a reference when creating my website because i think it was sensible to resemble someone who actually knows how to build and take the users into consideration when making a website.

So i saw this good one which i took into consideration when building my website, and that is:

Instructions Must Die

The other major source of needless words is instructions. The main thing you need to know about instructions is that no one is going to read them at least not until after repeated attempts at “muddling through” have failed. And even then, if the instructions are wordy, the odds of users finding the information they need is pretty low.

Your objective should always be to eliminate instructions entirely by making everything self-explanatory, or as close to it as possible. When instructions are absolutely necessary, cut them back to the bare minimum.

So with this red before i built my website i took it very lightly not to put instructions within my both of my websites.

Thanks

Information Communication Design: 5 Star Review

Hi,

As apart of the Information Communication Design Brief you have to do a 5 star review on a range of websites but they have to be in the same category, for example Sport and then you have to create a criteria for the website to for fill then you review each part of it.

So this is what im doing :

Game Retailers –

  • Game
  • GameStop
  • CeX
  • Grainger Games

and the criteria that i have assigned each website is :

  • Content
  • Navigation
  • Layout

and here is my First website for reviews.

Game Website ( http://www.game.co.uk/ )

Screen Shot 2013-01-05 at 20.20.59

Content –

  • Content is relevant to their market
  • All vital deals are expressed so the user can identify their market
  • Apart from the general games content there is also news articles at the bottom of the front page for the users to catch up. So game have thought while they are browsing their games they can read news.

Overall score for Content is :  5star

Navigation –

  • Drop down navigation
  • Navigation Bar apart of the header, very accessible knows that if the user wants to change page he can just go to the top of the page.
  • Every option in the navigation is relevant and is in the right option
  • Navigation bar is in the colour of the brand

Overall score for Navigation is :  5star

Layout –

  • Choice of colours match the brand
  • Content is well laid out in a box formation
  • Notable header and footer
  • Content all in the middle
  • Picture slider below the navigation

Overall score for Layout is :  5star

and the the overall rating for the full website is : 5star

Grainger Games ( http://www.graingergames.co.uk/ )

Screen Shot 2013-01-05 at 20.44.31

Content –

  • Content is relevant with no just games, also with phones, tablets ect
  • Text is hard to see over the picture slider
  • A bit of flash has been used to deliver their offers

Overall score for Content is :

4star

Navigation –

  • 2 lots of Navigation one above the header which is accessible and one below.
  • Top navigation is used for business, for example jobs etc and the second one is used for the content within the website, for example consoles etc

Overall score for Navigation is :

4star

Layout –

  • Two much going on, on the front page with flash spinning everywhere etc.
  • Background works well with the footer, so when you scroll down it sits on the footer. Very well thought out

Overall score for Layout is :

4star

and the overall rating for Grainger Games  is :

4star

Cex ( http://uk.webuy.com/)

Screen Shot 2013-01-05 at 20.55.07

Content –

  • Content is laid out in its form that it will be when browsing for a specific search
  • No deals stand out, no offers
  • Makes sure the user is secure

Overall score for Content is :

3star

Navigation –

  • Stacked drop down navigation
  • Navigation’s real boxy
  • Below the header

Overall score for Navigation is :

3star

Layout –

  • Not much to look at
  • Background resembles brands logo
  • Layout is more about the products not like your giving deals out
  • No Flash has been implemented to make the website look good, just the navigation.

Overall score for Layout is :

2star

And the overall score for CeX is :

3.5star

GameStop ( http://www.gamestop.co.uk/ )

Screen Shot 2013-01-05 at 21.08.47

Content –

  • Deals are highlighted
  • Consoles are separated out
  • Content is relevant to each console
  • Great colour choices for each console and they match their brand

Overall score for Content is :  5star

Navigation –

  • Login at the top and navigation of the website below the header like some of the websites I have reviewed
  • Drop down navigation is long but offers a ‘what’s option‘ which no other offers.

Overall score for Navigation is :  5star

Layout –

  • Laid out the same as the game website
  • Logo looks squashed
  • To much boxes on the front page and then is separated by a subscribe now
  • No colour choice apart from the logo which is black and red, when the navigation is grey but the background is red

Overall score for Layout is :

2star

Overall rating for GameStop is :

4star

And the overall winner is Game, it doesn’t surprise me or anyone else to be fair because they will or if they are already not the number 1 game retailer, recently just taken over Gamestation and the amount of money they will put in making a website fit for their customers will be mega money. Congratulations Game.

Interactive Communication Design: Final Outcome

Hi

In this post my portfolio website is finished and this is basically a round up of how it looks. So here we go:

Screen Shot 2013-01-04 at 22.59.24

Here is my homepage and it looks like it completely different from my final design because this is my home page and the final design is for my work. In this page it consists of a photo to make sure the portfolio your looking at is none and then way of contact which is my Facebook and twitter.

Screen Shot 2013-01-04 at 23.08.25

This is my work page and this is basically a computerised summary of this website that basically shows all my subjects then links it up to that page which i will show in the next photo. But when i get round to it this will show my work from work 2 and 3 if i get to it, no point of me putting it on now cause i haven’t even got their yet.

Screen Shot 2013-01-04 at 22.54.45

and here is the last page and every time you click on a subject one of this will show up and these are in the same layout but obviously subjects. Here we have a conext which has come out of the brief the desciption which is not like the brief because that can change. Also this page consists of a Evaluation and then a picture on the right of that text that will link you to my blog or evidence showing you have have done the task for example my flash page with give you a link to my flash website i have done.

Overall i am very happy with this website and i will continue to work on it to make it even better after the deadline has passed.

Thanks.

Interactive Communication Design: Final Design

Hi

finaldesign

This was my final design and i had gone with the navigation being in the top header along with the logo.

  • Logo – The logo which i will be creating is for my own personal branding in the subject visual communications and i thought it would be great since im branding myself as this, it would be only sensible to implement this into my portfolio website.
  • Navigation – This will be a simple navigation bar where you click on the options and it will drag you to that page. Simple and not complicated.
  • Computer and the subjects – I really like this idea that’s why its actually in my portfolio website because it describes that i use computers etc. So i created a desktop like situation where the computer will be showing what subjects i do where the user will be able to access this by just clicking on it.
  • Keyboard – the keyboard is just there for show .

Interactive Communication Design: Design 2

Hi

ScrollingPageEffect

On my second design i thought i would try and copy the scrolling effect which i really like but thought to myself this is high end stuff and even some top web developers can’t even do this. The scrolling effect is when, you launch a site the first page is basically on long page cut into different sections. so when you click lets say ‘Sport’ it will scroll down to that section on the same page and show the content on their. I think its a really good idea for a portfolio because you can have the subjects as the first page and each section a different subject. The only negative thing about this is that if i get to year 3 the page will get longer and longer and the content will get bigger and bigger and this full website will grow in the number of megabytes that are held, which means it will take even longer to load up the age on a basic connection which is not good for the user.
