Crafts and Media Video : Task

They was a email Guy sent to use containing task that we was meant to do that lesson. If i remember rightly you have to watch a range of videos and describe what the meaning of the story is and then the lighting and camera shots they had used in each scene. So i will attach what i did in that class to the bottom of this post:

Research – Critical Analysis Task

Clara’s Interview

Well in this video it’s an interview about someone sharing their life with the camera. Clara is mainly just sat on the porch of her house in Colorado, so as you would expect her being the leading role they are a vase amount of mid shots, medium close up and close up shots. These are very effective because it’s feels like you are interviewing Clara and would not work if you just had wide shots of her because you wouldn’t really get the full effect of her detail when she is telling her story. Not to say there isn’t any wide shots of her in this video, the camera does tend to throw the odd wide shot of the house in there now and again but this is when she’s had a break from talking just to get the full scale on how big her house is and where she actually is sitting on her porch. Also the camera does a lot of work on the composition of Clara, I mean one minute she is on the right facing the camera in “Interview” manner but then the camera moves to the left of her and she is facing onto her lawn. This is also very effective because it fits a lot more into the film and is not as boring as just planting her smack bang in the middle of the shot.

The Feeling of the film is like a look back into the good times and bad times of her life with the right tone of music feeding through the video like words in a book.

Errol Morris Documentary

This documentary starts like something off Godfather or Goodfellas with the explosion then similarly starts which looks like a mafia boss but is soon to be made a mob lawyer by the caption in the video. The full video has the mob feel to it from the way he talks, to the way he acts and tells stories. With this being a documentary you wouldn’t think that he would use any close up shots because Errol Morris is more focus on getting the message out to the viewers. On the other hand it is like he is giving the mob lawyer an interview about his role within being a mob lawyer and the kind of trouble he gets his self into. Murray Richman (Mob Lawyer) gives his story on all his cases and the background of all his cases and how he feared his clients. The camera does a lot of work in this documentary because its moving around a lot and it feels like his every sentence the camera moves.

They are two main camera shots within this documentary and these are medium close up and close up. With these you really get to feel Murray Richman’s stories, especially when he talks about his clients getting killed you actually feel that you are in the scenes of these murders. The overall feeling of this film is that you’re risking your own life by being in any part of the mafia, especially when you’re a lawyer because if you don’t win a big court case they will be after you.

Crafts and Media Video : Evaluation and Video

I have finished shooting my 1 minute video and edited it to the best of my ability and has been uploaded onto my portfolio website.

When i was shooting the video and tried to use my actors to the best of my ability but with them being my parents i didn’t really want to push them to much because they was doing me a favor an they was basically my last chance to shoot a video being it was the last day i had the video camera  etc.

I thought with me setting the video within a household that my house was the best place to set it because it didn’t involve me renting out the place and also getting lights out of the store because i thought if i use natural lighting it would make it like it is actually happening in the day time not having lights their for effect.

If you compare the actual video to the script then you will see that some of the scenes are not what i filmed and the general outcome is what i didn’t expect but even great series and films always alter their script when shooting and  i think i have shot a great video and the general message i wanted to get out of it was the same.

Crafts and Media Technologies: Camera Shot List

With all the work i have been doing inside and out of the classroom i have therefore developed a Camera Shot List for my 1 minute video. It’s very detailed and it involves every vital part of the video and that part is assigned a shot out of the many. Here is my document below:

Camera shot list

First Scene

Front door opening and woman entering – Medium Shot

Woman putting hat on hanger –Close up, Like a James bond shot when he’s in the office but not of him throwing it on the hanger just the close up of the hat being put on the hanger with them both coming into shot.

Man in kitchen with back turned to the door – Close up shot of the man’s face in focus and behind the face you can see the woman hanging up her jacket etc. out of focus

Man needs to be seen in the kitchen in various shots – Medium shot of man from behind either chopping something up, with a pan on the oven. Also we could have a medium shot with him having an apron on flipping the frying pan. We could also have an extreme close up of the guy’s eyes, and then close up shot look at the frying pan. Insinuating that he is actually cooking

Man needs to be seen turning around to ask the girlfriend something – camera on the far wall catching the guy turning around and then the camera moving to a over the shoulder shot with the woman in focus but you can see some of the guy.

Man gets on with cooking – medium shot in the middle of the two people focusing on the guy with head slightly turning to the kitchen worktop again.

Second Scene

Woman Waiting – Medium shot off the edge of the table of the woman waiting with excitement with the table laid out in a romantic way, waiting for the guy to deliver her meal.

Guy comes in with the plates – Over the shoulder view with the two plates in either hand, towel of the other shoulder and the woman and table out of focus knowing that the destination is the table.

The meal – These shots will have various perspective views as in the camera will be acting as if they are looking out of the man and woman’s eyes. This is the perfect shot for a conversation because I want to see both of them talking with expressions unlike having a medium shot seeing both of them two in shot you wouldn’t know who’s talking. I plan to have the odd medium shot with the camera on the table just to tell the viewer that they are 2 people in this scene but then cutting straight back to the other person perspective view.

Third Scene

Couch scene – Starts with a close up of the woman shouting “gfdgsgsd” at the television screen with headset on playing a video game on the Xbox. A View to get both of the them in shot would be another other the shoulder shot but getting the couch she is sitting on, the woman with headset on and the tele with the video game on. I could take a screen grab of the game to make sure that she is playing a so-called “man’s game” then panning out to a wide shot with the focus being on the woman in view of the tele.

I think you have read through this in class, all i have to do now is actually shoot the scenes, were I’m going to borrow a video camera and tripod from stores before the weekend and then have the full week filming.

Thanks, Hope this Shot list is alright.
